Feeding Great Danes
This is how we feed our Great Danes during their first year. We do this the first year for training and also to monitor their weight. As much as I hated the "gangly teenager" stage and wanted to fatten them up to no end, I knew better. A lean great dane is less likely to develop bone and joint issues. This is why it is important to NOT feed a Great Dane puppy chow after 3 months old. I take them off puppy chow and put them on Taste of the Wild High Prairie (a grain-free all life stage dog food) between 2 and 3 months. You also want to be very careful not to overfeed your Dane for the same reason. This feeding method shown in the video teaches them to enjoy being in their crates (They also sleep in there which makes housebreaking easy as pie since dogs naturally do not prefer to use the bathroom where they eat or sleep). It also helps them realize that I am the provider and I decide when they eat. I make them work for their meal by "sitting" and "waiting" patiently until I give the release command "okay". This helps tremendously with obedience training and also prevents the dog from developing food aggression! After their first year we free feed them to allow them smaller more frequent meals which helps in preventing bloat. If you do this, you need to continue to monitor your dogs weight so that they do not become overweight. They should fill out in their second year but until then they should appear thin and lanky.
